2000년 뉴베리 명예상을 받은 작품입니다. 다 읽고 뒤의 작가님의 후기를 보니

챕터북 시리즈 중에 한권인 듯 하네요. 작가님의 어린 시절이야기를 글로 쓴 작

품이죠.

26 Fairmount Avenue 에 집을 짓고 완공되어 이사하기 까지의 이야기인데 처음

집을 짓기 시작한 때가 1938년입니다. 집의 기초를 잡았을 때 허리케인이 불었던

이야기, 엄마와 형과 디즈니 만화 백설공주가 나왔을을 때 보러간 일, 집 공사 담당

자와의 의견 충돌로 공사가 중단 된 일, 새로 짓고 있는 집 주변에 도로가 들어서게 

되어 집 공사가 늦어지게 된 일 등등이 어린 토미의 시선으로 그려집니다. 

학교에 갈 나이가 되어 유치원에 등록을 하게 된 토미가 그토록 원했던 글자 배우기

는 일년 뒤 학교에 가야 배운 다는 소리에 일년 뒤에 오겠다 얘기하고 쿨하게 집에

돌아오는 모습은 정말 웃음이 나더라고요. 결국 유치원을 가서 pass 해야 학교에 입학

이 가능하다는 소리에 유치원을 다닙니다. 

짧은 이야기라 금방 읽힙니다.
