엘리가 어렸을 때 유치원에서 받은 금붕어. 어린이들에게 삶과 죽음을 가르쳐주기 위해 유치원에서 받은 금붕어지요. 다른 친구들의 금붕어는 금방 죽었는데 엘리 금붕어는 7년이나 살게 됩니다. 7년 후 어느날 마침내 금붕어가 죽게 되자 엄마는 "이건 별로 오래 살지 못했네." 라고 말하지요. 7년이나 살아낸 금붕어한데요. 놀란 엘리에게 엄마는 그 금붕어가 처음 금붕어가 아니라고 말합니다. 7년 동안 금붕어가 죽을 때마다 엄마는 수 많은 금붕어를 사서 다시 채워 놓았던 것입니다. 지금까지 13마리의 금붕어가 화장실 변기속으로 사라졌다고요. 그럼 도대체 14번 째 금분어는 무엇일까요? 13살 엘리에게 갑자기 나타난 과학자 할아버지와 엘리의 만남에 관한 이야기입니다.
