1차세계대전이 끝나고, 힘들게 살아가는 미망인 Johnny Swanson의 엄마 Winnie.
우리의 주인공 11살짜리 어린 소년, Johnny도 신문배달을 하며 엄마를 도와 열심히 살아갑니다.
집주인은 월세를 올리려 하고 - 사실 Stambleton의 많은 집들을 소유하고 있지만 - 엄마 Winnie는 걱정에 휩싸입니다.
여기저기 동네에서 할 수 있는 일들은 모조리 하려고 합니다.
그러던중 친한 의사선생님 Dr. Langford가 의문의 살인을 당하고,
그 집에서 허드렛일을 하던 엄마 Winnie의 앞치마가 발견되었다는 이유 하나로 살인범의 누명을 씁니다.
주변에 사람들은 Winnie에 대해 불리한 증언만 계속 하게 됩니다..
결국 Johnny는 혼자 남아 문제를 해결해야 하는...
재미있는 사실은, 영국과 프랑스의 눈에 보이지 않는 싸움 때문에,

재미있는 설정과 역사적인 배경, 중간중간 나오는 Johnny에게 벌어지는 재미있는 사건들
길지만, 흥미롭게 읽을 수 있는 책이었습니다.
p.s. 언제 어느사회나 有錢無罪 無錢有罪의 비극은 존재하네요..
