1) 총평 (완독 소감 + 간단한 원서 리뷰 포함)

계단 많은 집에 사는 사람들의 이야기입니다. 남의 남자를 뺏고 싶어 하는 여자, 남의 돈으로 살고 싶어 하는 여자와 이 두 여자가 사랑한 남자가 주요 등장인물이고, 이 두 여자를 사랑하는 여자가 화자이자 자신도 모르게 두 여자와 한 남자 간에 일어나는 사건의 계기가 됩니다. 등장인물들의 정신세계가 잘 이해되지 않아 오리지널을 찾아 읽고 싶어진, 그런 책이었습니다.

섬뜩하면서도 인상적인 구절이 있어서 옮깁니다.

Many people have told me they tried to kill their younger brother or sister. Most of these children fail because a parent comes in time. Bell succeeded — because her mother came too late. But it taught her something: if you have killed once, you can kill again.
