중간중간에 제가 보지 못했던 살짝 색다른 느낌의 문장들이 있었는데 1940년에 첫 출판이 된 비교적 옛날 책이라 그런 것인지 아니면 지금도 쓰이는 말들인데 제 부족한 읽기 실력 때문이어서 그런지 이유는 모르겠습니다. 아무튼 거기에다가 저자가 'real mathematics'라고 부르는 수학에 대한 이야기, 그 시절의 전쟁에 대한 이야기 등 일반 독자를 위해 쓴 책 같음에도 제가 정확히 이해하는 데에는 한계가 있는 이야기들이라 제 생각이나 느낌 보다는 소개 차원에서 책의 내용을 부분부분을 옮겨 오는 것이 그나마 나을 것 같다는 생각이 들었습니다...

“Statesmen despise publicists, painters despise art-critics, and physiologists, physicists, or mathematicians have usually similar feelings: there is no scorn more profound, or on the whole more justifiable, than that of the men who make for the men who explain. Exposition, criticism, appreciation, is work for second-rate minds” p.61

“I am not suggesting that this is a defence which can be made by most people, since most people can do nothing at all well. But it is impregnable when it can be made without absurdity, as it can by a substantial minority: perhaps five or even ten percent of men can do something rather well. It is a tiny minority who can do something really well, and the number of men who can do two things well is negligible. If a man has any genuine talent he should be ready to make almost any sacrifice in order to cultivate it to the full.” p.67

비교적 짧은 책이라 부담 없이 읽어 나간다고 한 것이 중간중간 살짝 대충 넘어가는 것으로 변했던 적도 있는 것 같지만 그래도 읽는데 수학이나 수학자에 대해 조금이나마 알게 된 느낌도 들고 재미는 있더라구요...

(옮겨온 문장들이 너무 한 부분에 치중되어 있다는 느낌도 드네요. 살짝 잘못 소개를 하게 된 것 같기도 합니다...)
