Korea : The Impossible Country (ch 21. Cinema: Boom, Bust, and Brilliance)
Screen Quota
04. 기타
<Special Feature: Interview with Choi Min-sik>
What did you think when you first saw the script and plot for Oldboy? Did you imagine it could become such a phenomenon?
I actually felt a certain freedom, due to its unique subject matter and format. In fact, I was more concerned there could be more unfavorable reactions from the audience than favorable ones... But to be honest, audience reaction isn’t something I take into too much consideration when I'm involved in film creation, so it wasn’t such a big burden. Because I was like a wolf—thirsty for characters, so to speak—at the time (and I still am), I was so glad that Oldboy came around. As for the wide disparity in reviews and reactions, I had expected it somewhat.
Between the fight scenes and the legendary octopus scene, it looks like it must have been a very physically demanding film to make. What was the toughest part of making Oldboy?
Of course, there was a certain physical fatigue involved. But, as the film progressed to its conclusion, the satisfaction and pleasure I got from it were all the more palpable. For instance, let’s assume I’m building a house in the style that I want. There will be trials and errors, and, of course, fatigue from physical labor. But as I can feel the house getting close to completion as time goes by, that physical fatigue soon turns into happiness. The physical hardship I felt in this film was nothing more than the sweat of happiness. I did agonize over one thing, however, and that was the character of Oh Dae-su himself. The portrait and character of a man who had been imprisoned for fifteen years while not even knowing why... I could only rely one hundred percent on my imagination. The situation couldn’t be analyzed according to any basis in reality. But in the end, since such a situation wasn’t possible in real life, it allowed me freedom to delve in creating the part.
