문명에 이르는 여정에서 단연코 가장 중요했던 디딤돌은 ‘글’이었습니다(But by far the most important step in the passage to civilization was writing.).
현재 가장 오래된 것으로 알려진 상형문자는 ‘플린더스 페트리’가 이집트, 스페인, 근동 지역의 선사시대 무덤에서 발견한 토기 파편들, 항아리들, 돌덩이들에서 발견한 것들입니다. 대체로 300개 정도가 발견되었는데, 대부분 같은 형태였으며, 그림이 아닌 거래부호가 대부분이었습니다. ‘플린더스 페트리’는 이 부호를 알파벳의 기원이라고 주장했습니다.
다른 형태의 글 형식도 발전했는데, 생각을 그림으로 연결하는 방식이었습니다. 아메리카 인디언들은 수페리어 호수를 건너온 무용담을 수페리어 호수 근처 바위에 투박한 그림으로 기록해 놓았는데, 지금도 볼 수 있습니다(Rocks near Lake Superior still bear remains of the crude pictures with which the American Indians proudly narrated for posterity, or more probably for their associates, the story of their crossing the mighty lake.).
알파벳 형태로 글을 쓰는 방식은 기원전 3000년경 이집트에서, 기원전 1600년 경에 크레타 섬에서 시작되었습니다.
The Phoenicians did not create the alphabet, they marketed it; taking it apparently from Egypt and Crete, they imported it piecemeal to Tyre, Sidon and Byblos, and exported it to every city on the Mediterranean; they were the middlemen, not the producers, of the alphabet. By the time of Homer the Greeks were taking over this Phoenician-or the allied Aramaic-alphabet, and were calling it by the Semitic names of the first two letters (Alpha, Beta; Hebrew Aleph, Beth).
