영국인 필리스 포그는 80일만의 세계  일주를 할 수 있다며 친구들과 내기를 한다. 
시종과 일주는 하던 와중에 필리스를 은행강도라고 생각한 영국경찰이 그들을 따라오며 방해를 하지만 세계 일주에 성공한다

필리스 포그는 여행도중 도움을 주었던 미망인과 함께 여행을 하다가 사랑에 빠진다.

영국에 기한보다 하루가 지나서 도착했다고 생각한 필리스 포그는 내기에 졌으니 자긴 가난한 남자일 뿐이라며 그래도 결혼해 줄 수 있냐며 청혼을 한다.

지구 반대편으로 갔다오면서 생긴 시차를 계산하지 않아서 착각했던 것임이 밝혀지고 그는 내기에 이기면서 다시 부유해진다.
