Amelia Bedelia 이 매력적인 캐릭터의 원작자인 Peggy Parish 의 조카인 Herman Parish가
원작자보다 많은 책을 썼군요
아래 글을 올렸듯,
집에 있는 I can Read 시리즈를 읽으려다가 아멜리아가 너무 웃겨서 동네 도서관을 다 뒤져
빌릴 수 있는 책은 다 빌려다가 싹 읽어버리는 중입니다
조카인 Herman Parish 가 쓴 책은 대략 세종류인듯해요
1. Amelia Bedelia 의 어린시절 이야기
(라기엔 원작은 70,80년대 가정부 느낌 물씬나고, 이 작품들은 현대 초딩 느낌이 가득하지만요)
2. Amelia Bedelia 의 가정부 이야기
3. Amelia Bedelia 챕터북 시리즈
이 중에 1번에 해당하는 책을 총 7권 빌려서 읽었고
이 글에서는 7권에 관한 이야기만 하려구요 :)
단어수가 적어서, 7권을 1권으로 치고 기록하겠습니다
작가가 달라서인지 캐릭터 느낌도 시대적인 느낌도 많이 다르긴 한데요
(원작자의 어른 아멜리아가 더 재미있어요)
초등학생 아멜리아의 이야기도 엄청 귀엽긴합니다
개인적으로 5,6,7권이 1,2,3,4권보다 더 어렵게(?) 느껴졌는데
예를 들어 6권 같은 경우는, 아멜리아가 부모님과 함께 집을 보러다니는 장면이 나와요
Tudor 스타일의 집, Colonial 스타일의 집, Ranch 스타일의 집을 보는 장면이 나오는데, 이렇게 집에 이름이 붙어있는줄은 처음 알았습니다. 작가가 작정하고 알려주려고 쓴 글이네요
7권 같은 경우는 hit the trail 이 출발하다, dig in 이 먹어~ 라는 뜻인줄도 처음 알았구요
프리스쿨, 킨더 아이들을 위한 책인데...
그것도 레벨 1인데 모르는 표현 투성이구만요 ㅠ
아이한테 가끔 영어책 읽어줄때,
엄마 영어로 한번 읽고, 한국말로 한번 읽어줘~~ 라고 하는데 (현재 만 두살반이예요 한국말만 엄청 잘해요)
읽어주다가
잠깐만 사전 좀 찾고... 하게 되는 경우가 자주 있어서 ㅋ
미리 읽기 시작했는데 덕택에 저도 다양한 표현을 배울 것 같습니다 :)
1. Amelia Bedelia - Takes the Cake
- Teddy had put icing on his batch. 한번에 구운 분량, 한묶음
- Amelia Bedelia squinted her eyes. 눈을 가늘게 뜨고 보다, 곁눈질하다, 사팔뜨기
- She cut the cake into even slices. 케잌을 한조각씩 잘라냈다
2. Amelia Bedelia - Joins the Club
- puddle 물웅덩이
- puddle jumpers vs puddle stompers
1) Puddle Jumpers took running leaps and flew over puddles.
2) Puddle Stompers took running leaps and landed in puddles. - It sounds like you are torn between two choices. 두가지 선택으로 갈팡질팡하다 (tear-tore-torn 찢다)
- The playground was filled with oodles of puddles. 많음, 다량, 산더미같이 많다
3. Amelia Bedelia - Tried her Luck
- We struck out. You are out of luck.(strike out) 삼진아웃
- The ambulance was pulling away. 떠나다, 움직이기 시작하다
- Knock on wood 나무두드리기 (좋은일이 일어나길 기원/ 나쁜일이 일어나지 않기를 기원/ 행운이 지속되기를 기원 / 불운이 멈추기를 기원) = touch wood
- She knocked three times on her porch railing. 현관앞으로 지붕 달아 돌출된 부분의 난간
- Worrying about luck had worn her out. 운을 걱정하는 것은 그녀를 지치게 했다 (wear out 해지게하다, 지치게하다)
- Superstitions (미신)
1) Bad Luck - Breaking a mirror / Black cat crosses your path / step on a crack (in the sidewalk)
2) Good Luck - 4 leaf clover / Horseshoe / a rabbit’s foot / Blowing out candles on birthday cake / Knock on wood
4. Amelia Bedelia - Is for the Birds
- she swept everything onto the ground. (sweep) 청소하다, 쓸다, 깨끗이하다

5. Amelia Bedelia - Gets a Break

- A ranch-style house does not have an upstairs.
- That ranch is having an open house. 농장, 농원 (아멜리아는 open-house party 를 상상하며 들어감)
- The front door swung wide open. 활짝 열리다
- We are running out of room. 우리는 공간이 부족하다
- There wasn’t any mud in the mudroom. 더러워진 신발,옷을 벗어놓는 구석방
- There is a huge rec room. (=recreation room)
- Our basement was wrecked. 파손 파괴
- I’ll keep my ear to the ground. 주의를 기울이다
- Amelia’s stomach growled. 꾸르륵 거리다, 으르렁 거리다
7. Amelia Bedelia - Hits the Trail
- Let’s hit the trail. 출발하다 (hit the road 길을 떠나다)
- Amelia fell flat on her face. (표현)
- When a snake crossed the trail, Chip let out a yell. (표현)
- It is more scared of you than you are of it(you are scared of the snake)
- Let’s move a little faster, pick up your snail’s pace. 속도를 좀 높여보자 (표현)
- Amelia looked for a snail with a pace to pick up. 걷고있는 달팽이를 집으려고 둘러보았다
- We’ll eat lunch on the bank. Dig in. 둑, 제방 (아멜리아는 은행으로 이해) / 눌러앉다, 자리를 잡다, 먹기 시작하다 (아멜리아는 파다 로 이해)
