• Mama sighed. "Soon you'll learn that there's no room for love in a woman's life. There's only one thing you'll need, and that's sabr, patience."
• Mama set the stirring spoon down. "Listen to me, daughter. No matter how far away from Palestine you go, a woman will always be a woman. Here or there. Location will not change her naseeb, her destiny."
• "There is nothing out there for a woman but her bayt wa dar, her house and home. Marriage, motherhood - that is a woman's only worth."
• "It doesn't matter where we live. Preserving our culture is what's most important. All you need to worry about is finding a good man to provide for you."
• "College is out of question. Besides, no one wants to marry a college girl."
• "Marriage is what's most important for women."
•Had any man she'd ever known helped his wife raise children? Motherhood was her responsibility, her duty.
•"Because marriage is what's important for girls" "Not college. You're almost a teenager. It's time you grew up and learned this now : A woman is not a man."
• "A boy is better, trust me. They'll care for you when you're older, carry on the family name-"
• "Most of my American friends at school claim their parents don't care. But you should listen to my mom's friends. They're unbelievable. If it was up to them, we'd still live in Arabia and bury our female infants alive."
• "Keep these words close, like a piercing in your ear: If you don't give a man a son, he'll find him a woman who can."
• It was Fareeda's idea to not breastfeed Deya. Breastfeeding prevented pregnancy, and Adam needed a son.
• "You need to make sure our culture survives, and that means teaching a woman her place."
